Main Focus
My primary research focus in this themes delves into the complex and pressing issue of gender-based violence, with a special emphasis on violence against women. This area of study not only seeks to shed light on the prevalence and various forms of violence that women face in different cultural and social settings but also aims to understand the underlying systemic and institutional factors that perpetuate such violence. Through this lens, I explore the intersections of gender, power, and violence, aiming to uncover the mechanisms through which societal norms and gender roles contribute to the marginalization and victimization of women. My work is dedicated to amplifying the voices of survivors, understanding their experiences, and advocating for effective policies and interventions that address the root causes of gender-based violence, ensuring justice and support for those affected.
Furthermore, my research on gender-based violence, particularly against women, extends to examining the efficacy of state policies and community interventions in preventing and responding to such violence. By critically analyzing the role of legal frameworks, social services, and community support systems, I aim to identify gaps in the current approaches to tackling gender-based violence and propose solutions that are both culturally sensitive and empowering for survivors. This involves a multidisciplinary approach that combines insights from anthropology, sociology, and public health, among others, to foster a holistic understanding of gender-based violence and contribute to the development of more inclusive, equitable, and effective strategies for its eradication. Through this work, I aspire to contribute to a world where women can live free from the fear and reality of violence, supported by communities and policies that uphold their rights and dignity.
Violence against women in Southeast Asia
My work bridges comparative policy analysis and cultural studies, such as in Timor Leste, to forge transformative approaches against gender-based violence, advocating for policies and interventions that tackle its systemic and individual dimensions.
My research portfolio, reflecting a profound commitment to addressing gender-based violence, particularly against women, draws from an array of projects that I have undertaken throughout my academic and professional journey. Notably, my involvement in projects such as “Mechanisms for Handling Cases of Violence Against Women Based on State Policy During a Pandemic: A Comparison of Several Southeast Asian Countries” highlights my focus on evaluating and improving state policies and legal frameworks to better protect women. This project allowed me to delve deep into the comparative analysis of how different jurisdictions respond to gender-based violence, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby identifying effective strategies and gaps in existing policies.
Additionally, my academic contributions, including papers presented at international conferences and published works, such as “On The Subject of Woman: Subjectification of Woman in Violence Against Woman Handling Process in Timor Leste,” further underscore my dedication to this field. Through these endeavors, I have explored the nuanced dynamics of gender-based violence within specific cultural and socio-political contexts, offering insights into the systemic barriers that survivors face in seeking justice and support. My research not only advocates for stronger, more responsive legal and social support systems but also emphasizes the need for community-based interventions that are informed by cultural understandings of gender and power. Through a multidisciplinary approach that bridges anthropology, public policy, and human rights, my work strives to contribute to a global dialogue on ending violence against women, advocating for policies that not only address the symptoms but also the root causes of gender-based violence, ensuring a safer, more equitable world for all women.
